What Causes Black Specks in Injection Molding? 

Injection molding black specks are small, dark particles or streaks that appear on the surface or inside of molded plastic parts. Black specks are usually the result of the following:

  • Carbon build-up in the barrel or screw

Optimize Processing Parameters

It is one of the quickest ways to improve your black speck situation. Too much heat or too much residence time are the leading cause of material degradation, which turns into carbon. Relying on hotter temperatures to push more output is only going to make your problem worse. Adjust your barrel zones to hit the recommended temperatures for your material. Reducing back pressure and screw speed can also help reduce shear heat. Excessive screw RPM is another hidden problem; even when your barrel heaters are set properly, high rotational speed can produce shear heat that can burn the material from the inside out. Reduce screw RPM incrementally if black specks persist despite correct temperature settings. Remember: You want the melt to be stable, not boiling.

Use Clean, High-Quality Raw Materials

If your base material is dirty, there is nothing you can do with your machine settings to prevent black specks. Dust, humidity, and old material combine to create bad batches. Reusing too much regrind is another common cause. When possible, keep regrind below 5-10% from known materials. Store all resin in airtight containers with desiccants.
